Rise Above: The Mindset That Turns Setbacks Into Power

By Andreana Jackson | The Balance with Andreana Jackson

Leadership is often associated with titles, authority, and achievement — but real leadership is forged in moments of adversity. It’s shaped by mindset, resilience, and the decision to rise even when life delivers unexpected challenges.

On this episode of The Balance, I’m joined by former Mayor of North Miami Beach and President of Piper Companies, Evan Piper, for an honest and deeply inspiring conversation about leadership, overcoming obstacles, and developing the mindset needed to turn setbacks into strength.

From Childhood Hustle to Entrepreneurial Leadership

Evan Piper’s entrepreneurial journey began early. At just 11 years old, he was washing windows door-to-door, learning responsibility, discipline, and the value of earning his own income. By 14, he was already a certified mechanic, launching what would eventually become Piper Automotive & Marine from his parents’ driveway.

By the time he graduated high school, Evan had hired employees, built operational systems, and learned one of the most important leadership lessons of his life:

You can’t do everything yourself — leadership is about empowering others.

That philosophy became the foundation for Piper Companies, which today spans automotive and marine services, construction, medical mobility solutions, real estate, and professional speaking and training.

Leadership That Translates Beyond Business

Evan carried those same leadership principles into public service when he became Mayor of North Miami Beach, a city of more than 40,000 residents.

Whether leading a business or a city commission, Evan believes leadership is about alignment — bringing together people with different personalities, perspectives, and goals to work toward a shared outcome.

“Leadership is about motivating people, keeping them inspired, and creating systems that work even when you’re not there.”

The Accident That Changed Everything

In 2001, Evan’s life took an unexpected turn.

While on a test flight following aircraft maintenance, the plane suffered an engine failure during takeoff. Though the aircraft made it back to airport grounds, it landed short of the runway, struck a hidden pothole, flipped — and left Evan with a spinal cord injury.

Doctors told him he would never walk again.

For many, that would have been the end of ambition. For Evan, it marked the beginning of a mindset shift.

“Even in the face of a setback, I chose to see opportunity.”

Mindset Is the Difference

While recovering in the hospital, Evan reflected on a lesson he learned years earlier from his first flight instructor — a man diagnosed with terminal cancer who greeted every day with the words:

“Better and better every day.”

That philosophy stayed with Evan.

Rather than focusing on limitations, he focused on possibilities:

  • Expanding into medical mobility modifications

  • Designing FAA-certified aircraft adaptations so he could fly again

  • Engineering custom solutions to continue captaining his own boat

  • Helping others with disabilities regain independence

“Without the right mindset, I wouldn’t be as successful as I am today — not just in business, but in life.”

Service, Community, and Giving Back

Beyond business and politics, Evan has remained deeply committed to service. He has served on multiple boards, including leadership roles within the North Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce and Camillus Health, providing free healthcare to homeless and underserved populations.

“I don’t need a title to serve. I’m here to help.”

A Legacy Rooted in Perspective

Evan is also a proud father, grandfather, author, and keynote speaker. His book, The Money Mindset, was written to give audiences practical next steps after hearing him speak about motivation, leadership, and success.

At the heart of everything he does is one core belief:

Setbacks don’t define us — mindset does.

Final Thoughts

This episode of The Balance is a reminder that resilience isn’t about avoiding adversity — it’s about reframing it. Leadership isn’t about perfection — it’s about perspective. And success isn’t just measured in milestones — it’s measured in mindset.

If this conversation resonated with you, share it with someone who needs a reminder that strength is built — not born.
