Inside Stress: The Science & Practice of Regulation

How breathwork, awareness, and daily rituals are redefining modern wellness

By Andreana Jackson

In today’s world, stress is no longer an occasional experience—it’s a constant state.

But what if the real issue isn’t stress itself…
but our inability to regulate it?

On this episode of The Balance with Andreana Jackson, I sit down with Brandon Ortiz, Holistic Performance & Nervous System Coach and Founder of Evolve U, for a conversation that reframes how we understand stress—not as something to eliminate, but something to manage with intention, awareness, and practice.

Watch the Full Episode

An exploration of stress, breath, and the quiet power of regulation—where clarity begins the moment you slow down.

From Performance to Presence

Brandon’s work didn’t begin in stillness—it began in motion.

With a background in strength and conditioning, working with athletes and high performers, he quickly realized that physical training alone wasn’t addressing the full picture of wellness.

What was missing?
The nervous system.

That realization led him into breathwork, meditation, and somatic practices—tools that now form the foundation of his work helping clients regulate, reset, and reconnect with their bodies.

The Modern State of Dysregulation

One of the most compelling insights from this conversation is simple—but profound:

Most people are not functioning from a place of balance.
They’re functioning from a place of constant activation.

This shows up as:

  • Anxiety and hypervigilance
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Digestive disruption
  • Emotional reactivity
  • Physical tension stored in the body

At the center of it all is cortisol—the body’s stress hormone—released during “fight or flight.” While this response is natural, the problem arises when we never come out of it.

We stay “on.”
And over time, that becomes our baseline.

Where Stress Lives

Stress is not just a mindset—it’s a physical experience.

It lives in:

  • The tightening of the shoulders
  • The clenching of the jaw
  • The knots in the stomach
  • The unexplained tension in the back and hips

The body keeps score.

And perhaps even more fascinating—this tension isn’t always just ours.

The conversation introduces the idea of transgenerational epigenetics—that trauma can be passed down, stored within the body across generations, influencing how we respond to stress today.

Breathwork: The Immediate Reset

If there is one takeaway from this episode, it’s this:

Your breath is your most powerful tool.

Not complex. Not expensive. Not exclusive.
Just intentional.

Brandon walks through simple yet powerful techniques that can shift your state in real time:

The Physiological Sigh

A double inhale followed by a slow exhale—designed to immediately reduce anxiety.

Box Breathing (4x4x4x4)

Used by high-performance professionals to create calm under pressure.

Extended Exhale Breathing

A longer exhale to slow the heart rate and bring the body into a state of rest.

Even in-studio, the shift was undeniable—calm replaced tension, clarity replaced noise.

Regulation Over Reaction

Perhaps the most relevant takeaway—especially in today’s fast-moving world—is the difference between reacting and responding.

When the nervous system is dysregulated, we react:

  • Quickly
  • Emotionally
  • Defensively

But when it is regulated, we respond:

  • Thoughtfully
  • Intentionally
  • Clearly

That distinction alone can change conversations, decisions, and ultimately—outcomes.

A Practice, Not a Fix

This work is not about a single technique or quick solution.

It’s about building a lifestyle that supports regulation.

Brandon’s approach reflects a holistic rhythm:

  • Movement
  • Breathwork and mindfulness
  • Nutrition (physical and environmental)
  • Emotional awareness
  • Community and connection

There is no one answer—only a collection of practices that, together, create balance.

The New Definition of Balance

At the close of our conversation, I asked a simple question:

What does balance mean to you?

The answer was equally simple:

A regulated nervous system.

In a world that constantly demands more, that definition feels not only relevant—but essential.

Final Thought

Balance isn’t about avoiding stress.

It’s about knowing how to return to yourself—again and again.

Because in the end, true luxury isn’t just how you live.

It’s how you feel.
